About the TISP Training Workshop

The workshop will be held on 28-29 April 2011 at the Delta Meadowvale Resort & Conference Centre, Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. The purpose of this workshop is to help IEEE members improve the teaching of engineering and engineering design in pre-university schools (primary schools, middle schools and high schools).

In this workshop, IEEE members will learn how to work with teachers of pre-university schools, and how to conduct hands-on sessions for these teachers on engineering topics. The teachers will then use these sessions on a regular basis with their own students.

The expectation is that IEEE members who complete the workshop will contact local schools in the future, and work with their teachers on lesson plans that demonstrate engineering and engineering design. Examples of lesson plans are available at:

The workshop is held for one and a half days, and it provides attendees with examples of lesson plans, suggestions on the best way to contact and work with the pre-university school system, and description of successful management of a TISP program in an IEEE Section. The event is free of charge for all IEEE members and invited educators. IEEE will reimburse all reasonable travel-related expenses for this workshop.

Travel-related expenses include up to a one night hotel stay and transportation to and from the workshop location.

What Occurs at a TISP Training Workshop?

Section leaders host Teacher In-Service Program (TISP) training workshops for engineers interested in working with their schools and school systems and in helping to increase the level of technological literacy of local pre-university educators and their students.

During a TISP Training Workshop participants will:

learn tips and strategies on how to connect with their local educators,
participate in hands-on activities,
hear from key local educators,
receive resources to help them conduct teacher in-service presentations.

What is the Teacher In-Service Program?

The Teacher In-Service Program (TISP) enables IEEE volunteers to share their technical expertise and demonstrate the application of engineering concepts to support the teaching and learning of science, mathematics and technology disciplines.

IEEE offers training workshops for its members on how to provide in-service programs to local pre-university educators.

These in-services are essentially professional development workshops aimed at helping teachers bring exciting hands-on engineering lessons into their classrooms. Once trained, members can connect with pre-university schools (primary schools, middle schools and high schools) in their local communities to deliver these hands-on in-service programs.

What are the Goals of TISP?

* Empower Section “champions” to develop collaborations with their local pre-university community to promote applied inquiry-based learning

* Enhance the level of technological literacy of pre-university educators

* Encourage pre-university students to pursue technical careers, including engineering

* Increase the general level of technological literacy of pre-university students for many years

Since 2001, over 120 in-service presentations have been developed and presented by volunteers. Approximately, 3,000 pre-university educators have participated in an in-service program impacting 315,000 students worldwide.
